Before Cardiacs, there was "The Filth", a psychedelic punk band formed by brothers Tim and Jim Smith around 1977 with vocalist Michael Pugh and drummer Peter Tagg. They changed their name to "Cardiac Arrest" at the suggestion of Pugh around '78. Pugh and Tagg left in 1980, during the production of The Obvious Identity, and the band went through a number of name changes before eventually settling on "Cardiacs" in 1981.
However, there was also a side project by Tim Smith and Dominic Luckman that never went anywhere outside of a few tracks that were recorded.
